Law of Marginal Utility when Sources are Diminished

Sounds like a corollary of some law stated in your 12th Std. Economics Text Book? BINGO...almost! The Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility was probably the most well fed law in the history of economics. Oranges, Apples, Ladoos, Gulab Jamoons, Rasgollas, Alcohol, Nicotine & Tobacco (later in college/b-school where the last three weren't taboo anymore) were used as examples to enunciate the principle.

For all the 'non-economists' the law goes like this... "As a person increases consumption of a product - while keeping consumption of other products constant - there is a decline in the marginal utility that person derives from consuming each additional unit of that product." Simply put, the more of something you have, the lesser gratification it gives you beyond a point.

Even the site where I am copying this from gives a foodie example.. 'This is the premise on which buffet-style restaurants operate. They entice you with "all you can eat," all the while knowing each additional plate of food provides less utility than the one before. And despite their enticement, most people will eat only until the utility they derive from additional food is slightly lower than the original.'

However, what one finds amusing is the corollary. What happens when you have just two ladoos? You enjoy every bit of it would probably be your answer...not just so simple, there is an extremism there too. What I saw was very strange, yet true. Unknowingly I knew that it was so. Here goes an abnormal observation to explain a commonplace law.

Nagpur was witnessing one of its finest seasons of monsoon. It pricks when it rains...so we stopped on the way to an already delayed meeting. In a city like that, people understand that you are stuck in the rain, even if it is the Circle Head of a leading telecom company. The out pour in the midst of nowhere saw us stepping into a rambled chai-patri (tea stall) which was quite big for its kind, though its roof was thatched. Located amidst very small stand alone government offices, it served as a lunch sit-out for the employees who carried dabbas to work. The people who generally work in such offices are from a pathetic economic strata. A typical person who I'm referring to would get stuck to his 'Govt. Job' label for a lifetime but will not manage to make a square living for himself. He is not in positions where bribes come his way and his hands would quiver even if he came across some. He would minimize all expenses on himself...wear the same shirt for three days in a row with a handkerchief around the collar to keep the shirt from getting dirty, carry an old bag that he bought from the second hand bag shop at a throw-away price, wear a chappal that looks like it hasn't changed ever since he started working, a watch that was given away by the mazdoor union on some leader's birthday and most importantly carry a dabba with home-cooked dal, rice and curry all in one compartment.

This is where your typical Mr. Right here enters the patri with his dabba. I watch him eat with the focus of a horse. He digs into his food articulately mixing the familiar items to form a delicacy of sorts...first some rice dug out of the mound taken and dipped into the small cup bearing the dal swiftly interacting with the sabji to form a familiar, rather routine but tasteful delight. I wait to see his hands reach his mouth to see if his eyes go elsewhere...but the focus remains. With every intake of his lunch, his focus increases. Until that point, where it multiplies manifold.

The box is empty and I think he is done. He craftily licks the palm of his hand. And them the thumb, the forefinger, the middle finger, the ring finger...even the little finger isn't spared. And as if to give it a grand finale, he puts all of them at one go into his mouth to clear off any possible remains that might have escaped the wrath of his taste-buds.

I wasn't too sure about the order of the fingers, that was just a logical guess. All the while, I was looking at his eyes and not his fingers or the mouth. The eyes had a sparkle. He knew this is all that he had for today, till he went back home for dinner, if he could afford some. I could see that in his eyes. But mind you, something told me his hunger was taken care of. There was no greed for more. He just wanted to be sure that he had all of whatever he had.

Lets finish the law before the perspective. When you have just enough, you can choose o be satisfied or crave for more, making you a victim of the Law of Diminishing Marginal Utility. Again like in economics, where every term is defined, just enough would be equal to that amount which may give you a feeling of deprivation but shall not actually be so bad.

The perspective that immediately flashed was much more adorable than the law. His ungli-chant (finger-lick, translated literally) made me reflect deeply about attitude at work, in life and towards self-three things that makes 95% of the world to anyone reading this. If we stay as focused at work as Mr. Right's focus on his meal, we would not only be satisfied to our fullest, but shall also gain every bit of reward that is due to us...to the last Lick! If we give relationships the time, space and trust they deserve, we wouldn't crave for more in our last

You can't after all lick your fingers in a five star hotel after your Rs. 1000 +14.5%  VAT  you shell out for the dinner buffet. Neither do we gather the guts to wear our grandfather's keyable wrist watch on our trendy jeans and jackets. We wonder who is looking at our bag and footwear and restrain from using the old ones. That's still ok...

We buy newer stuff stocking more and more trying to be if not ahead, atleast at par with the trends which we unknowingly create.

Isn't our Mr. Right is better of than each of us for the levels of satisfaction and regret-lessness that he carries with him by wearing his same old white shirt with a handkerchief around the collar, the old bag from the second hand shop, the chappal that  is as old as his job, the watch he might have got from the mazdoor union and the dabba with home-cooked dal, rice and curry all in one compartment? Give it a thought...

Media...The Make-Believe Experts

The advantage of working out of home is an endless access to the remote with a spoilt choice of over a ten English news channels and another dozen in regional languages that I understand viz. Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam & Hindi. And better still, all the action in the last 2 months is letting these channels top TRPs higher than reality flicks and soaps.

Amidst all this, I have come to reflect upon the idiosyncrasies of these channels, if not all, at least most. We weren't short of events in the recent past...from MJ, Andhra Floods, YSR (including the birth of Rosiah & Jagan coming of age...all of a sudden), Tiger Woods, Telangana (and brothers and sisters like Ghurkaland, Vidharbha, Purvanchal etc.), Copenhagen, Ruchika, Tiwari, the Kotla test and Jaitley, 3 Idiots (with Chetan Bhagat becoming the villain of a cast that he was not a part of)...the list was breathless indeed. I have been keeping one eye on my laptop as I write (which just changed from my passion to my profession now) and another on the TV catching bytes on almost everything.

One thing that did strike a deathblow into my thoughts was the license the media had to focus on elements that they wanted to and publicly interpret and infer.
As a democracy, each of us do share the right to self-expression...but morality seeks that one be given space to think and reflect on lines which aren't biased. But where's the space. When the job of media would be to communicate, why would they want to do the thinking on our behalf? If I'd take it to the level of rightfulness, it is just as good as undue influence according to Sec. 16 of the Indian Contract Act of 1857.

Take Telangana for instance, one channel was showing mobs burning down buses through out the day when a Bandh was declared. The fact remains that this was a one-off incident in the city that happened in the wee hours. The entire city along the rest of the day was at peace.

Repeat instance...people are angry at DSP Rathore for smiling as he walked out of court. At least 60% chances are that no one would have cared if he hadn't smiled that day. Thanks to his funny bones..life is hell. Fair deal that it was, why are we letting ourselves be scapegoats?

They want you to see it the way they want you to see it. Reminds me of Russel's act where he says...they show you a car accident and an Asian, an explosion and an Arab, a terror attack and an Indian...they just don't say anything...and then give you that kind of expression which says..."Well, what do you think?!" Why doesn't media cover good normal people who are smiling, do some good, are above all living a normal life for heaven's sake.

I'd be forced to think normalcy isn't newsworthy. Neither is abnormality...however Interpreted Abnormality is definitely what we get...for Free.

Loneliness is the mother of all Screw-Ups!!

How many times have you observed consciously that we make the most stupidest of decisions when we don’t have people around us?

Remember… in school you probably picked someone’s pencil when no one was around. I’m sure many of us also have the habit of behaving weirdly when we know no one is actually around. Remember the empty eerie parking lot where it was only you and you?

What is it about silence that makes the human mind so uncomfortable…asks Moorie from Tuesdays with Moorie. There have been instances when we do shattering things just because we are alone. Come to think of it, I just went 55 kms into the Highway and back… just because I’m alone here in this city! Can you beat that?

The reflection is though not about the eeriness of the silence. Can we consciously  convert this into a productive force? My best reflections in writing occur only in the depths of silence. If you ask me if there is a difference between the two Silence, I’d say the only difference is in the frame of mind… the willingness to do the right thing.

So what’s the theory? Silence kills. Silence Creates too!

The Truth behind Satyam...

Ever thought about this? What if the Satyam revelation had happened way back in 1965, assuming that there was the concept of a Public Ltd. Co. even then?
Lets start in a phased manner. Ramalinga Raju, an ambitious youngster then, wanted to make a lot of money. his foresight and vision led to the establishment of a multi-national software services giant named Satyam.

As time went by, Satyam went public to the people, money came in from the general public, FIIs, FDIs etc. However, I'm sure everyone would agree that Satyam as what it is today is defnitely Raju's baby & brainchild. There is albeit a huge ownership that Raju exercises over Satyam and its' resources. However, when this ownersip he had, the effort that he put in and the expectation that he had in (in rupees/dollars!) making money did not tally, Raju put his hand inside the Money Box. Quite natural for an owner. In a small company, most of the Boss's expenses are written off as the Company's expenses.

Over a period of time, Raju dug deeper in the boxes, he reached out for more.. some more and a little more than what could be accounted for. Assuming that it was HIS Company.. (BAAP ka Maal in chaste Hindi), he started doing this on a regular basis. Everyone in the Company is definitely involved and informed in this entire melodrama and is also well fed in this entire operation money-drain, though officially denied and veiled for evident reasons. The operations guy in my company who handles finance can tell me from the Balance Sheet, the divesture of funds, you think CFO @ Satyam was a nitwit to get there?!

What upsets me and half the world associated with Satyam is not what and how Raju did but the manner in which he did it. However, I have a very interesting perspective to share...

When Raju put in his sweat, toil and tears into making such a huge company, there was no one to reward him. People think that by buying shares in a company with a few meagre rupees, ownership is bought.

Ladies & Gentlemen, Ownership comes from within, not from wallets and pursestrings. No doubt, Raju has flouted norms of Corporate Governance to the limit untendable, but he isn't a criminal of immoral stances. It might eb a crime, legally to siphon out money from one's OWN company, but not a sin of the highest order.

The point I'm trying to drive home is not problem oriented nor perspective oriented.
I am trying to drive a solution home...

The solution to this would be compelling the Founder directors of any Public Ltd company from not owning more than 1% shares in toto thru individual or family holdings when the Company goes Public. The ownership feeling should remain without doubt, but should not percolate into a drain out of personal interest in the company.

While the Satyam Fiasco has just settled down, all discussions lead to one single question: Will the likes of Infosys & Wipro also in the time to come show such shockers?
What is the guarantee that they have been having a clean slate all the while? Also, what is the guarantee that they are not busy now, re-writing their books of accounts to be sure that they aren't pitted in the time to come?

Micro-Mini- Marketing

Reasons more than a dozen, I preferred a Scooterette to a Bike… a few components of the dozen being my Bulky Bag, the Half a Dozen Books apart from those in the Bag which I carry around, hoping that they will a least get a glance from me & of course, in sheer avoidance of the troublesome gears, which requires a lot of Presence of Mind, which my Dad says I lack (he has to be right you see; he can’t be my dad otherwise!)

Also, the comfortable defense that the women of the home could use it too, made it all the more easier to take my stance. I was sure that neither my sister nor my mother would chip in time to learn riding a bike; they claim that they always have better things to do!

Life comes in Packages; Combo Packs to be precise. I also got something that I Din’T want – BAD MILEAGE!!! Thanks to this one factor, I could write this blog. You might look at me as a complicated Non-Human Creation or rather Mis-Creation of the Lord almighty for connecting all those lines above to the concept of Micro-Mini-Marketing. Feel Good; you don’t have an option and you would be reading this only if you wanted to read it or because you are my good friendJ.

I learnt a valuable marketing lesson. Just around a month ago, when I was going to attend a party hosted by one of my Distinguished Faculty, I was speeding over a Flyover. Thanks to my Gearless Bike, I could accelerate up to 80kms per hour comfortably over the stretch of the flyover. As I come down, I realize that there is a Pop Up from my Pocket! No; this ain’t any Web Pop Up. It was a Precious Pop Up. It was my favorite Silver-Gold Metallic Parker!!! I stop my vehicle at the flyover courageously, park it with a side stand, pick up my pen and happily place it in my pocket. I drive down to the destination and post-arrival realize that I was dressed well for the occasion. Too well, rather. The theme wasn’t blue, but my shirt was!!! If you guessed it right the parker mercilessly spilt all the ink in the refill onto my shirt. How I managed the show would fit into another blog altogether! Coming back, the shirt was duly taken care of, but the Pen wasn’t. Don’t get perturbed yet, I shall tell you what Micro-Mini Marketing is when you finish with the blog!!!

Anyway, this Bad Mileage thing, which I was referring to a while ago, made my visit to places like Secunderabad, the city which is 6 kilometers away from my place, a Multi Tasking Affair. I used to finish with a lot of tasks which I could accomplish; the most common ones being getting my Grandpa’s Pass books updated in the banks thereat, depositing cheques, getting coffee for Grandpa from his favorite shop there, “Marketing” for Mom at Monda Vegetable MarketL and the usual Electronics Stuff which need attention – be it my mP3 player or the earphones or the watch! On one such trip to the Nostalgic RP Road, Iwas luckily carrying with me the Injured Parker. As I Came out of the bank, I noticed a Signboard which read “Deccan Pen House”. Now, wouldn’t a man with an injured dog feel happy if he saw the board of a Veterinary Doctor!!! A pen house was something that I was exactly looking for to resurrect my Parker! I walked in without another thought. The ambience was still. I say still because it gave me the feel of a shop which was at its best a couple of decades ago. There were people with empty pens coming in asking for their respective refills-ONLY. And the by employed was quite obliging and reassuring too. From behind the curtain comes a man well-built with a zeal and passion of war writ large on his face. Somehow I could correlate him to Duryodhana in the Mahabharatha. 6feet and 8 inches mustve been hs height and another inch added by his heavy sandals. He must’ve comfortably weighed over 80kgs. He was my Marketing Guru- to be.

He gave me a bright smile as if he knew me from the days of the war! I did return, though doubting if the charges included the smile too. Nevertheless, he jumped over to attend to me. Just with the same preciosn as a Doctor would have with a sthetescope, he judged my pen saying that it was indeed a bad condition. He did of course, to my comfort, give me the reason- Hyderabadi Heat! As he tore a receipt which bore no indication of what he was going to charge me, he said it would take him 3 days to clean the mess. Anything was fine if I could get back my pen in Useable condition. But yes that meant another 12kms up & down with all the bad mileage that my bike gives me! I agreed, asked him what would he charge me, to which he promptly replied that it would be reasonable!

I did go after a week to pick up my Lady love…the Metallic parker from it’s clinic, the Deccan Pen House. The same welcome, the same smile but yes, at a cost! 70 Rs. for the cleaning and another 35 for the refill he said as I handed over the receipt to him. He brought my parker with the same excitement as a Doctor would get a new born baby to its father after a Caesarian! I mumbled that 70 bucks for the cleaning was too much as I delved into the mathematics and economics of a cleaning business, the figures which I definitely don’t recollect.

There began Lesson ONE. He smiled, just like Duryodhan and said “But it saved your beautiful pen. It’s a Collector’s item from the Parker Series Sir, a Polished combination of the two royal Colors. Trust me it’s worth it.”

I thanked him profoundly (for carrying out the operation and SAVING my love!) and headed home. Every time I saw the Parker, I remembered this Man! That was the Impact! He tied my tongue. MY tongue. MY tongue! What was that magic which flattered me, satisfied my ego, allowed me to think that the money I spent was worth it and most importantly made me Trust that Duryodhan! That was the power of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) at the lowest possible level.Where all it meant was a mere 70 Rupees for him and nothing more than reverence from me.

As I was thinking of this magic one evening sitting by the tank bund, I find that the parker is jammed! To my horror, I discover that it meant another ride down to Secunderabad! I tie it up as usual with one more round of tasks, due to come the very next week. As I walk into the shop this time, I’m greeted with the same ambience, same smile and same Effect. There is however another effect now, he Shuts the Pre Historic Door behind me. I deduce that it is Lunch time for him and hence the process! Sharing my guilt of interference with a few other precious customers of his, I tell him “Boss, the Parker is giving trouble again!” Handing it over to the boy there indicating him to look into it he says…looking into my eyes…. (Lesson TWO)

“That’s Great News Sir!”

A brief pause, “I don’t get to see you otherwise.” I like his wit; and of course the lesson that he teaches me. In a jiffy I get back my Steel Beauty ( It isn’t a grammatical mistake i.e. it is not a “Stolen” Beauty…it was Gifted by my sister..Thanks to her too)

I emphasise a thanks and promise him I would drop by the next time I’m out to purchase Stationery. As I walk past, he says, Why don’t you join me for lunch sir? We’re closing just for that. I was sure he wasn’t asking just because he had Extra Lunch to share with me or perhaps somebody who was expected didn’t turn up and he thought that the idea of throwing it away was bad! I was assured he was asking because he meant it. I could have agreed, but lest, wanted to save him the trouble. I thanked him for offering and confessed that I already had my lunch.

For those in bliss, I mean ignorance, that was Lesson THREE.

I wouldn’t appreciate the idea of driving down 6kms to purchase stationery. But yes, I would love to meet my Micro-Mini- Marketing Guru once again. Perhaps a few years down the lane I would buy all the stationery that I and my office would require from Deccan Pen House only!

Now to the less interesting and more important ideology- the Concept of Micro-Mini- Marketing; Its all bout how you keep your customers happy. Customers, not by the magnitude of purchase or the net expected value, but by the emotional bond. Customers, who may not guarantee a huge figure in the Balance Sheets appearing on the Profits Head, but customers who would say, the man in that store is better than Sam Walton. That my friends, is Micro-Mini- Marketing.

Learning from the Road…

When receptive, I do learn. From whom, and how is still a mystery! For that matter, my learnings can be compared to distance education. Only after I reach home do I realize that I had learnt something. At times, it even takes months to realize and understand what I learnt!

It’s been a while since I have been driving my vehicle. But much before that, I religiously used to pedal my way to many a places. That’s not when I realized what the cycle taught me!

Every time I used to pedal up slogging n cursing my selves as to why I didn’t opt for the Public Transport instead, I convinced myself that my job wouldn’t be always tough. Today I realize, we slog only hoping nay, being sure, that there is a down slope where we would have to put in minimal effort, just by staying alive :) .

This was when I was sitting back in the lawns one evening only trying to figure out why I should work harder towards self-actualization! I knew that we are doing it for ourselves, but what I wanted was some empirical example. And then when I realize that the Cycle used to fly down with a doubled speed compared to what I had pedaled the last time while upslope without even having to move! The Liberation and the bliss that the fresh breeze of the down slope brings is unmatchable! Just like the satisfaction, happiness and of course the deep breath that one may take after reaching the Board Room of some Corporate looking back at the tough journey behind!!

There I had it a year ago. Only that I failed to learn.

Much later, I upgraded to a scotterette. That was when I didn’t Learn a lot and today I do understand as to what I missed out on all these days.

I’m sure the very sign of a Speed Breaker means something disturbing to us when on the road…it was so for me too, not anymore. Let me brief you on what I do…If the speed breaker is just a small hump, it receives the same treatment meted out to an ordinary road i.e. the accelerator without any mercy remains constant, but never goes down, brakes are as good as dead. If the Speed Breakers are real “Hunks,” the potential damage that they could cause to my spinal cord (who cares about the bike anyway!) would call for a drop in the accelerator by 15 degrees and perhaps a small effort on the brakes. But…..here is the Crux…I have become so familiar with these Hunks now that I know which end of the speed breaker is a flat surface and hence I reduce my speed to divert to that very end, but no…Brakes are still a strict “NO-NO!!”

IN one such effort today, I found that more than half the population of the motorists on the road wanted to use the flat surface. Result: The traffic is more to the side of the footpath than the mid-way!!!

I had a solution. Make the speed breaker even!

That made me put a question to my own self. “Why are these called SPEED-BREAKERS in the first instance? Is the Municipality deriving any monumental pleasure by causing inconvenience to and posing threats to the spines of the senseless motorists like me? The answer would be “NO.” That brings me to the conclusion that Speed Breakers are called so because they require you to brake to an extent which is stoppable, only allowing you to re-accelerate after you get past the hump. Just like any other piece of wise discovery, this too might strike a sense of familiarity to us. What lies behind the speed breaker theory is more meaningful.

From the very First Standard, the standing instructions were “Attempt the Easier Questions First.” That, I always thought was cowardice to face and fight the misery of the tough ones and trust me; I never attempted a tough Question first in my life!!! In the process, the tough ones are always left unsolved, un-attempted and unresolved at times even for years together!

Similarly, when I try and avoid the speed breaker by looking for a flat surface at some end of it, I am only running away from trouble. I just tried it today, believe me, It isn’t all that hard to hold down the brakes and cross the speed breaker. It is just like that 0.0001th moment of the needle of the injection poking you! And most importantly, it is much easier than looking for the flat surface, slowing down to divert and getting into a queue of like-minded people who also want to use the same flat surface!!

We need to slow down in life many a times and when we are required to do so, it is best that we do it. There is no point in cribbing fanatically about them and trying to look for easier was out. The reason why we are required to slow down is simple again…

We might perhaps be going at such a speed that we might possibly move over to further speeds which may be uncontrollable. Needless to say, we shall stop only if caught by our neck!!!

What Can “WE” Do???

Apart from the thoughts that fill my mind about doing something substantial and phenomenal which will change the way people think & live..in real definition- DEVELOPMENT…,I also observe that each one of us do have our own approach to this so called term.

I ask Laden or Saddam what they could do for the country, The best answer that I would expect from them (..I say expect…) is “I would MIND MY OWN BUSINESS!!!!”

One kid on my favourite Tank Bund sidewalk, selling tea tells me he will study and keep his parents happy. That’s his contribution. One another says..”Destination USA…I will be INDIRECTLY contributing to the development of my country” (….this one beats me though!)

How can YOU & I make a difference to the society? All of us being Mother Teresas and Vivekanandas will only be Fatal! Imagine a nation of a billion Mother Teresas & Vivekanandas! All will starve and perish!

That ain’t any Renaissance at all; that’s Branded Plagiarism transformed into Stupidity!!! Who will make money for the country? Who will run the Government? Who will contribute in up-scaling the GDP? That is not a feasible solution!

What I’d like to bring to light is this- Why is is then, that time and again, We are given EXAMPLES of the people of the like that I just mentioned?? Is it that it is an established fact that emulating them is Impossible?? Or is it that there is some other motive?

Before I put more more puzzles ahead…one peep into what the names really stand for…

Vivekananda- Strong Will, Courage, Fearlessness, Patriotism, Determination, Focus, Aspiration, Achievement, Actualisation….many more to go…please feel free to analyse hereafter

Mother Teresa- Kind, Benevolent, Charitable Act, Care, Affection, Emotion, Feeling, Sympathy, Empathy…..applicable as above

The above exercise was not a aimless. What we could perhaps observe was that we could relate PEOPLE or rather NAMES to ATTRIBUTES. So does that not mean we need to emulate these attributes rather than the people themselves. Imagine a Bill Gates with the Heart of Mother Teresa!!! (B&M gates Fdn is a HOAX!!!!)

Now that apart, what does contribution to the devlopment mean to you??

Does it mean analysing the Balance Sheets of some fraudulent Company, as an Auditor, bringing it to light and saving the money of a few people and in the process earning your own bucks?!

Does it mean settling for a cushy software job in the daytime adding to the value of the GDP of the US of A (..thanks to the Low Indian Labour Costs) and then compensating by volunteering at an NGO in the evenings to help rural folk??

What do you think will be the most ideal way in which you might like your contribution to development??

Replies can be in the form of comments. Please don’t bother to indicate your identity or contact. You can too, if you would choose to.

Gimme whisky..Else I'll Shoot you!!!

What still puzzles me is whether Manu Sharma was a Human or a BEAR!!!

The story goes like this....A hungry bear gets into a bakery's shop....Manages to find some good food...On disapproval by one of the Baker's good friend, the bear pulls out its 0.5 pistol, shoots at him and leaves!!!!

Stunned by this species, the Baker goes back home and opens up the Britannica Encyclopedia and looks for "BEARS". HE IS SHOCKED TO FIND THIS....

BEAR- An Animal often classified as wild, EATS SHOOTS & LEAVES.

Manu Sharma was perhaps like this very bear. On refusing to oblige by giving a whiskey...He pulls out his revolver and shoots at Jessica!!!

Sounds funny...But really ain't. What we really need to understand is that it is that one minute of effect of all the frustration that Manu, in this case had that made him resort to such a violent action.

This one shot from the Gun was the result of some BROUGHT FORWARD frustration in typical accounting language.

It is said that three things lose their effect and value when talked about, viz.,
Good done to others, Bad done by one's own self & Worries and Frustrations that have a deep dent in the heart.

It can, but happen to any one of us, pray not though, that the very point of frustration materializes when we have a revolver in hand or some dangerous equipment. What we can do about it so as to prevent ourselves from being a victim to frustration and its disastrous effects is of course emptying them at frequent intervals just like we do with our dustbins.

The Hunt…(of RATs n CAT(s))

With the Notifications running in from all the Top B Schools in the country, I am Prey to the CAT too!!

Just a year ago, I was thinking I wouldn’t be a part of this RAT race…I also mocked at my friends calling them RATs…as they were soon going to be victims of the CAT!! Seldom did I realise what was lying ahead of me.

For those who know me and read the “ABOUT ME” in the space allotted…you would already be thinking my feet are on too many boats..or rather…that my TWO feet are on TOOO many boats!

Well, I do have an Explanation.

CA & CWA, for the benefit of those who don’t know, are more of the typical “CORRESPONDENCE” courses in the Indian Sense.

Reason- They are attempted by every Tom, Dick & Harry; If Lucky, they clear the exams too; and there is no value addition other than the subject knowledge which is more self-learnt than imparted.

“Swadhyaya” is prescribed to be one of the optimum solutions to better understanding…but what happens here is not learning..I wouldn’t be termed erroneous if I said it could be compared to the process of eating food involuntarily.

The Food does go in, no doubt. It struggles to get digested, which doesn’t prove to be fruitful. Result: a gush through the Mouth..in simple terms, a VOMIT!!! May sound weird, but is true. I don’t include those who eat the food voulntarily and digest it and absorb what is required, for they are the ones who really make a difference to the profession .

Coming back to the Hunt, I felt Value Addition with respect to Communication Skills, Dynamism, Broad Thinking and Developmental Attitude is something that Professional Courses will never supply! However hard the effort might be, it is after all a part time affair and the FULL TIME EFFECT can never be given!

This has made me a take the race for the Best of B Schools in the country which have the niche that I am looking for. There again, there are so many factors of consideration . An interesting facet being the whole arena of uncertainty that prevails over the whole process. The ambiguity in the selection process and in the allotment is something that really needs a deeper look.

The B School is a place where the principle of What you think is What you are applies to a large extent. If you’d like to be a moron…you’re welcome and if you would prefer being an Angel…so be it!!

After my visit to a few of the Best Business Scools in the country and my voracios reading about various other Institutions in the country, all that i thought was ESSENTIAL was “BALANCE” & “LEVEL-HEADEDNESS.”

Might sound basic and fundamental, but what is made or ruined is this very Funda! Seeing thevariety of people at the Instis. there took me a bounce away! On one hand a Guy drinks all day and slogs all night to prepare for his Quiz the next day and tops the class! On the other there is this guy who does study..minus the drinking…might end up much lower on the grades! Reson: ATTITUDE…you might be wondering where am taking you…stay tuned..More to come soon.

Alos feel free to post ur comments. And yes; No offence meant for the Professional Courses.. I mentioned the exceptions already!

I would be honoured if the folks from the Big Instis do post their comment on the latter part of the blog.:)
